![]() One would think Erislandy Lara is nearing the end of his professional fighting career, but I think he’s still good enough of a technician to handle most opponents who won’t be able to match him. And given his last two fights with the similarly grossly over-matched Brother of Canelo and Greg Vendetti, it’s 50/50 what he chooses. He’ll drag it out for 12 dull rounds if he wants, he’ll finish it if he wants. Lara will do what he wants to in this one. That is leaps beyond his ability and record. ![]() Cornflake Lamanna is a tough dude who comes to fight, but he has no business being in anything called a world title fight. This being for the vacant WBA “world” (“regular”) middleweight title is an absolute laugh. If it sets up Lara against Jermall Charlo, neat. Lara stepping up to middleweight at 38 is fine. Erislandy Lara vs Thomas Lamanna Scott Christ (26-8-2) Note: Lewis Watson is taking a leave of absence so, for now, the prediction squad is down to three. Ruiz-Arreola, of course, plus three more bouts on PPV, as well as Erislandy Lara headlining the FOX undercard that starts at 7 pm ET. If Ruiz is as good as some boxing fans think he is, he should beat better heavyweights than Arreola. All he has to do is wait.įor Ruiz to have a better chance against Joshua or Tyson Fury, he’s going to need to keep fighting, preferably better opposition than 40-year-old Arreola. Ruiz probably won’t want to take on someone dangerous like Wilder, Luis Ortiz, or Dillian Whyte and possibly lose his WBA mandatory position because he’s got a guaranteed payday. ![]() Hopefully, Ruiz doesn’t choose to play it safe from this point on until he gets his mandated title shot in 2022 or 2023. With the win tonight, Ruiz is now the mandatory challenger to WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. You got to imagine that Whyte is licking his chops right now, thinking that he would like to fight Ruiz to take advantage of all the flaws Arreola exposed. It was a good performance, Ruiz, but not the type that suggests that he would beat a solid heavyweight like Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte, Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, or Luis Ortiz.
